Ion  An atom or group of atoms that become electrically charged by gain or loss electrons.

Laminar Air Flow  Air flow in which essentially the entire body of air within a confined area moves with uniform velocity along parallel flow lines.

Laminate  A material formed by bonding together two or more layers in order to achieve an effect not otherwise attainable from each of the component layers separately.

Launderability  The ability of an article such as a glove or a garment to be laundered to a specified level of cleanliness.

LCD  Abbreviation for Liquid Crystal Display - a display material that can be changed from transparent to opaque or vice versa by applying an electrical voltage across it.  The display emits no light of its won.  Depends on light from  other sources for visibility.

Leak, HEPA Filter  A gap or void in filter media or gaskets which permits unfiltered air to penetrate into the Cleanroom or clean work station.

Megarad (Mrd)  The measure of radiation that is absorbed by the garment or wipe being sterilized.

Microelectronics  The design and production of integrated circuits and of equipment that uses integrated circuits.  Before the advent of microelectronics, electronic systems depended on assembling large numbers of components that had to be connected by copper wire or strip and soldered joints.

Micron  A unit of measurement equal to one-millionth of a meter or approximately 0.00003937 inch (e.g. 25 micrometers are approximately 0.001 inch).  

Micrometer  Another word for micron.

Monofilament Yarn  One fine thread of continuous length.

Multifilament Yarn  Two or more continuous monofilaments assembled or twisted together.
